August 9, 2010: Welcome!

WELCOME… to the newly revamped website of the Acadia Cinema Cooperative Ltd. Many thanks to Ned Zimmerman for getting it off the ground. Built with a new content management system, it will be easier to keep up-dated, so the work can now be shared among a group of volunteers. A major advance in every way. Come visit often for all the latest news from the Cooperative.

And while we’re at it, a very special “Tip of the Hat” to Heidi Kalyani who volunteered to design the Cooperative’s original site in the first few month’s of life (2003) and who with Ken Shorley served as ACC web masters—seven years of faithful service. Thank you, Heidi and Ken.

WELCOME TOO… to the 62 supporters who have bought 112 shares in the SINK THE MORTGAGE share-buying program since January 1, 2010. To get the full Sink the Mortgage update, visit our Shareholders page.

THE BRAND NEW STUDIO-Z also deserves a hearty welcome! The versatile multi-purpose studio space above the theatre lobby has undergone a complete facelift and is ready to serve as a small theatre for intimate concerts, live performance or digital cinema; a place for classes, meetings, rehearsals, seminars and community activities. It also serves as the Green Room/dressing rooms (with washrooms and showers) for the Al Whittle Theatre. It boasts 35 soft seats, theatre lighting, sound equipment, a digital projector and a retractable projection screen. The studio also provides excellent acoustics for live performances and presentations. The facelift is thanks in part to an Innovative Communities Fund grant from ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), donations from the estate of Jack Sheriff and many, many hours of volunteer labour.

A month long contest was held in January to find a name for the newly revamped space and the response was enthusiastic, creative and amazing with 126 people providing 240 suggestions. A great number of them wanted to honour Bill Zimmerman—a founder, and designer/manager of the Cooperative’s facilities—for all of his hard work and expertise in every facet of the ACC’s development. The entry by marke slipp seemed to say it best, and Studio-Z was born.

ACC’s PR Committee wants to thank everyone who participated in the contest. It made for a very exciting time. The creativity, good humour and enthusiasm expressed knew no bounds!
